Why Your Messy House Is Ruining Your Productivity
I don’t know if you’re like us, but the minute life starts feeling a bit out of control, our home reflects that immediately. Despite adopting some daily practices to help keep our home organized, a recent mini kitchen renovation exposed how fragile our organization ecosystem was.
What started in the kitchen, spread to the living room and then to the office and then to guest room; and soon every room felt like it was in disarray! But perhaps even more problematic was that we, too, started to spiral!
The lack of organization affected our mood, blocked our creativity, and significantly stunted our productivity. So here are 3 steps we’ve learned to preserve your sanity and your productivity during life’s messy moments!
Prepare yourself - I know we’re not always ready for the mess life doles out, which is why it’s even more critical to come up with organization systems that function in your home. Spend time - when your mind is clear - to establish processes that work for you and your family! Before our mini kitchen reno, I wish we spent a few days coming up with a game plan on where our kitchen supplies and dirty dishes would live 🫠.
Allocate 20 minutes of clean-up time - we found that this works best at the end of the day, but try to ‘reset’ your high traffic rooms to the best of your ability. It gives you a clean slate for the next day and helps with the process of clearing the mental clutter.
Designate a mess room or corner - this option isn’t pretty, but it sure is effective and real! Sometimes you just need a place, out of sight and mind, to house the mess temporarily. For us, it was our guest bedroom.
Sometimes life, and subsequently your home, get messy right before it gets beautiful! This is a reminder to do your best to set yourself up for success to minimize your recovery time and keep yourself on track!
